Sunset Boulevard Movie – Review

Roger Ebert, a top movie critic, in his movie review says that Sunset Boulevard film noir “remains the best drama ever made about the movies because it sees through illusions”. It took someone who grew up outside of America to see through Hollywood's illusions – Billy Wilder.

An Austrian-born screenwriter and filmmaker, he worked in Europe prior to coming to Hollywood. He spoke very little English when he arrived, but he wasn't to be stopped. Within 10 years he co-wrote and directed Double Indemnity, one of the best film noir movies of all time. And the year after that he received Academy awards for best direction and best script for The Lost Weekend, one of the best drama movies. He would go on to win 7 more Oscars during the golden era of Hollywood.

Despite his writing and directing successes, he said he never learned to trust his English.

Sunset Boulevard movie, one of the best film noir movies of all time, was impeccably written, directed and photographed. It has one of the most original opening scenes in movie history, one of the most dramatic finales, plenty of classic movie scenes and a dialogue full of iconic quotes. The story is narrated by a “dead man”, an unusual element for best drama movies, which adds elements of a horror movie and a satire comedy.

To capture real Hollywood, Billy Wilder got as many Hollywood stars as he could to participate in the Sunset Boulevard movie. The ageing film star was played by Gloria Swanson, one of the top American actresses of silent film era. The part of her butler who used to be her director was brought to life by Erich von Stroheim, a real silent-era Hollywood director. Later, he was upset that he was remembered for that role more than for his filmmaking achievements, and referred to it as “that goddamned butler”. Cecil B. DeMille, one of the famous movie directors of Hollywood’s best epic movies, made an appearance as himself in Sunset Boulevard, and charged an arm and a leg for it.

One of the best drama movies about the golden era of Hollywood, the Sunset Boulevard film noir was received very well by the critics and the viewers. However, it received mixed reviews from some of the veterans of Hollywood who felt that their reality was portrayed too harshly. It was rumoured that their discontent cost the Sunset Boulevard film its Oscars: it received 11 nominations and only 3 awards.
